2020 Summer Masters

2020 Summer Masters

Whether you have never picked up an oar, or rowed in high school or college, we welcome all masters (adults ages 18 and up) into the Summer Masters Program.

CCRA is committed to the health and safety of our rowers and staff. We will be following the recommendations of local authorities and USRowing regarding COVID-19 concerns. So, our summer program will use small boats only (singles and family doubles/quads), to reduce possibility of virus spread, and to conform to social distancing guidelines. To further demonstrate a commitment to safety, all sessions will be held on Lake Meahagh, a shallow and protected lake: perfect for small boat rowers, beginner and experienced alike. All rowers and families must read and agree to adhere to CCRA’s COVID-19 Policies and Procedures.

For those who are new to rowing, you will have a dedicated coached session geared for beginning (novice) rowers.

For experienced rowers, you will have opportunities to improve and perfect your sculling skills in both recreational and racing singles. Although there will be no regattas this summer, it’s still a great opportunity to get on the water, build endurance, and have fun with your teammates. Don’t despair, fall regattas may still be on the horizon!

  • The summer session runs from July 12 – September 3
  • Coached and non-coached practices on Lake Meahagh. Click here for a map of all CCRA locations.
  • For adults brand new to rowing: We will arrange for you to learn the basic rowing stroke on a rowing machine (erg) prior to your first on-water experience. Please contact us ASAP to schedule these sessions.

Program Fee:

  • Novice (beginner) rowers: $180 per rower.
  • Experienced rowers: $240 per rower.
  • College Students: $100 per rower. Subject to availability. Please contact Dina at [email protected]com for more info.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Summer registration deadline is July 10, no exceptions!

1. Coached on-water practices:

  • Sunday: 7:00am-9:00am: For experienced rowers only
  • Sunday: 9:30am-11:30am: For novice (beginner) rowers

Due to restrictions imposed by COVID-19, seating availability is limited. If necessary, seats will be assigned on a rotational basis, and every effort will be made to get wait listed rowers into the following week’s session. Experienced rowers can opt for informal rows or independent rows to enhance their on-water experience.

Our professional coaches will teach these sessions. Practices will take place rain or shine. In the case of extreme weather, practices will take place remotely via Zoom. Be on lookout for communications via the SportsYou app for last-minute updates.

2. Weekly on-water informal rows:

Led by experienced, approved masters rowers (on-water when weather is favorable, optional remote (Zoom) session if not). Novice rowers must be approved by Coach Steve before attending these on-water sessions. Other dates/times may be added, depending on leader and equipment availability:

  • Monday: 8:30-10:30am
  • Saturday: 7:00-9:00am

3. Independent on-water non-coached rows:

Arranged on participant basis for highly experienced rowers only:

  • Rowers that have passed a safety/proficiency test given by the head coach may sign up to row singles or family doubles on Lake Meahagh at their convenience, as long as other practice sessions are not in-session. Strict adherence to CCRA on-water rules and Lake Meahagh’s traffic pattern is required. These rowers are also encouraged to participate in coached and informal rows in family doubles with their CCRA youth rower.

4. Weekly informal Zoom erg sessions

All summer rowers with an erg (rowing machine) can join this weekly remote workout session:

  • Wednesdays, 7:15-8:45pm

Due to COVID-19 concerns, summer regattas have been canceled. However, summer is a great time to work on your technique and endurance, just in case the fall racing season materializes! See the Events and Races Calendar page for regattas that we are hoping to attend in the fall.

All Masters rowers must sign a waiver stating that they can comfortably complete the following swim test: Swim 50 meters, tread water for 10 minutes, put on a PFD (lifejacket) while treading water. This is for your safety, and the safety of your fellow rowers and coaches.

All Masters must abide by CCRA Safety requirements, and watch the US Rowing Safety video. See the Safety Requirements page.
